The Election Commission says the code of conduct introduced for the third phase of local level elections in Province 2 scheduled for September 18 will be implemented from today.

The code will be effective for the government and ministers, political parties, offices of concerned local governments, public organisations, security agencies and staff to be deployed for the polls. Likewise, media, private and non-government organisations as well as individuals holding the public office should also abide by the code.

After the implementation of this code, the government cannot recruit, transfer or promote staff; forward grant and conduct any survey. Likewise, new development programmes and budget plans cannot be introduced.

A minister violating the code can be blacklisted and fined upto Rs 100,000. If anyone breaches the code five times regularly, she/he can be barred from contesting any elections for next five years.
