Kathmandu traffic police want public transport workers to be in uniform

Don’t get surprised if you see drivers, conductors and their assistants on any public transportation vehicle clad in a uniform for the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division says it has begun discussions towards the end.

Around 50 organisations of public transporters have agreed with the police’s idea that the uniform would help the workers look disciplined and be responsible to passengers, says Division’s spokesperson SSP Umesh Ranjitkar.

“In the uniform, the drivers and conductors improve their behaviours with passengers. It will have a positive message internationally,” Ranjitkar says, “Because the workers will be identified in the uniform, it will make them maintain their dignity.”

The Division’s Chief DIG Sarbendra Khanal had led the first round of discussions with the entrepreneurs about the proposal this week.

“We will hold another round of discussions next week,” Ranjitkar says, “That meeting may come up with a decision on the uniform and how it can be implemented.”

If successful, the plan will be implemented for taxi drivers too. The Division has already convinced operators of private schools to ensure that their drivers and assistants also wear the uniform.

Ranjitkar says, “We are eager to implement the new rule.”

Around 32,000 vehicles play roads in the valley every day for public transportation.
