Kathmandu, August 27

Public transport entrepreneurs have demanded that the bus fare for across the country go up before bookings of tickets for the upcoming Dashain festival will begin.

The greatest festival of Nepalis is just one month away and the government wants to begin the bookings as soon as possible to facilitate people returning home from the capital and other major cities.

However, the transporters have put forward a number of conditions including the fare hike. They have claimed that public transport fare has not been revised scientifically in last five years.

Likewise, they have demanded that they be allowed to use bus roofs to transport people as there will be more passengers than in normal times.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transport Management held a meeting among stakeholders on the issue today.

Speaking at the meeting, Federation of Nepali National Transportation Entrepreneurs’ General Secretary Saroj Sitaula said there would be no point in opening the booking unless their demands were met.

The Department says it will conclude the discussions within next one week and open the bookings at the earliest. The next meeting has been called for Thursday.
