Kathmandu, October 25
Dashain is coming to an end today. During the festival, demand for green vegetables and fruits, along with meat and fish, typically rises sharply.
Over the eight-day main Dashain period, from October 17 to 24, around 2.8 million kilograms of agricultural produce and fish entered Kathmandu’s Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market.
According to data from the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board, a total of 2,794,221 kilograms of vegetables, fruits, spices, fish and other goods entered the market during the period.
Green vegetables accounted for the largest share, with 2,191,329 kilograms entering the market over the eight days.
Fruit consumption was also high, with the market receiving 383,300 kilograms of fruit and 111,740 kilograms of spices, according to the data.
As fish is the only meat-related product traded at the market, 88,297 kilograms of fish entered during the period. Another 19,555 kilograms of miscellaneous goods were also supplied.
Daily figures show considerable fluctuations in the volume of agricultural produce entering the market during Dashain. Saturday recorded the highest volume, with 611,875 kilograms of goods arriving in a single day.
Today saw the lowest volume, with only 139,105 kilograms of vegetables, fruits and fish entering the market.
Although hundreds of thousands of people leave the Kathmandu Valley during Dashain, Kalimati Market continued supplying produce to meet the strong demand among consumers who remained in the valley.
As people who travelled outside the valley to celebrate Dashain begin returning to Kathmandu, market activity is also picking up.
