Kathmandu, June 15

The Election Commission has clarified that the second phase of local level elections scheduled for June 28 cannot be put off at any cost now.

It has warned that if the government deferred the polls, it would invite a “political, electoral disaster.”

Responding to some top leaders of major ruling parties, the Commission clarified that it was not in the position to defer the polls.

“They have said postponing the polls would be the disaster in consideration of constitutional compulsion to hold provincial and parliamentary elections,” Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel said after the meeting.

The leaders, however, have requested the Commission to think further if there are other possibilities of avoiding the crisis.

The ruling parties had consulted the Commission after the agitating Rastriya Janata Party Nepal demanded to put off the polls at least in some districts.
