The government and Non-Resident Nepalis’ Association have reached an agreement to develop Laprak of Gorkha district, which suffered a huge damage in last year’s quake, into an integrated model village.

At a special programme organised in Laprak, NRNA, National Reconstruction Authority, and the Ministry of Urban Development signed an agreement to this effect in the presence of President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.

As per the agreement, NRNA will develop an integrated settlement on the site where quake-hit Laprak locals have been putting up at temporary shelters.

“We will immediately prepare a settlement development master plan and hand it over to the government,” NRNA President Shesh Ghale told villagers after signing the agreement. “Once the government approves the plan, we aim to start reconstruction work before the coming monsoon and hand over the new houses to you people before the winter.”

According to government statistics, the quake affected 612 households in Laprak. NRNA plans to develop a new settlement on a hill covering 326 ropani of land where there are temporary sheds at present. NRNA plans to build 1,000 houses at the cost of around 350 million rupees. The government has already approved the plan. Under the first phase of the plan, NRNA plans to develop a model village in Laprak for the victims of the quake.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, addressing the programme, appealed all Nepalis to turn sorrow into happiness through hard work.

We should build our country on our own, Bhandari said, appealing the youths to engage in reconstruction work.

At the programme, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, vice-chair of the UCPN-Maoist, said the effort to turn Laprak into a model village will gain pace now. He thanked NRNA for taking this initiative.

NRNA president Ghale called on all sections of the society to help turn Laprak into a model village.

He said: The onus is on us to build our villages on our own. Working together, we shall make Laprak a model village in true sense. While rebuilding Laprak, I hope we will be able to show an example of cooperation.

Ghale said Non-Resident Nepalis’ desire to take part in national reconstruction has started turning into reality from today.

On the occasion, CEO of the reconstruction authority, Sushil Gyawali, said: With help from NRNA, Laprak will be turned into a model settlement of the country.
