Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet company Starlink has offered to provide free internet services in areas affected by the devastating floods along the Nepal-China border.
Expressing deep sadness over the disaster, Starlink said it was ready to support the Nepal government and humanitarian agencies involved in relief and rescue efforts.
In a message posted on X on Saturday, the company said it was prepared to send Starlink equipment and provide free internet services as soon as it receives the necessary approval from the Nepali authorities.
“We are ready to send Starlink equipment and provide free service to the Government of Nepal and humanitarian partners as soon as we receive permission,” the company said.
Why is Starlink important during a disaster?
Starlink said its satellite-based communication service could be particularly valuable in areas where floods and landslides have destroyed roads, bridges and conventional mobile networks.
The company said the service could help rescue teams coordinate search operations for missing people, while also supporting health workers and medical teams treating those injured in the disaster.
It could also allow families in affected areas to communicate with relatives and loved ones who may have been cut off from communication networks.
How does Starlink work?
According to Starlink, its equipment can be set up and connected to high-speed internet within minutes of being taken out of the box.
The service requires two basic conditions: a power supply and a clear view of the sky for the equipment to connect to Starlink’s satellites.
The offer comes as rescue and relief operations continue in flood-hit areas along the Nepal-China border, where damage to transport and communication infrastructure has hampered response efforts.
