On the eighth day of the agitation launched demanding the government make sugar mills ready to give outstanding payments to them, sugarcane farmers are finally ready to hold talks with the government.
In the past week, the government had repeatedly asked the demonstrators for a dialogue, but they were refusing, demanding payments first.
However, a meeting of the protestors’ committee held this afternoon decided to hold talks also, according to Rakesh Mishra, a leader of the team.
Accordingly, a meeting has been scheduled with the officials of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies later today.
Demanding that the government and sugar mills implement a deal signed with them in the first week of January this year, the farmers have been staging the protest since Sunday last week.
The farmers had launched a demonstration at the same place in December last year for several days demanding the sugar mills pay them outstanding bills on time. The agitation had ended in a five-point agreement, in which the government had agreed to coordinate efforts to make industrialists clear all dues within January 21.
However, one year later, the farmers came back to the capital claiming the government and the industrialists cheated them.
