Police chief says Pant murder probe is underway, but it may take longer time

Nepal Police Chief Sarbendra Khanal speaks at a meeting of the Sutainable Development and Good Governance Committee in the National Assembly, on Monday, December 10, 2018.

Kathmandu, December 10

Inspector General of Nepal Police, Sarbendra Khanal, has reiterated that the national police organisation is rigorously investigating into the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant, a 13-year-old girl from Kanchanpur of farwestern Nepal.

Khanal, however, maintains that probing some criminal cases may take longer time than expected.

The chief of Nepal Police made the statement at a time when stakeholders as well as members of the public have questioned the organisation’s efficiency as nearly five months have passed since the crime.

During a meeting of the Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly on Monday, Khanal said, “It is not that we have not done any investigation. Many works are underway.”

Khanal refused charges that he was under pressure from power centres not to reveal the truth of the case and he put pressure on the investigation officers accordingly.

He maintained the police would complete the investigation without tolerating any form of pressure.

The top police official also requested the lawmakers to help create a conducive environment for the probe.
