Kathmandu, July 28

Officials of Nepal and India held a meeting to discuss problems created by floods in the Koshi River and the future of proposed Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project.

The Joint Team of Experts held the meeting in New Delhi on Thursday and Friday last week, according to officials.

It has been learned that the two countries signed an agreement after the meeting. Details of the agreement, however, are not divulged yet.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Energy, Prabin Raj Aryal, says the meeting was a regular affair and its discussions were merely technical. “It doesn’t make any policy level decision or agreement,” he adds.

Director General of the Electricity Development Department, Madhu Prasad Bhetwal, had led the Nepali delegation.

The two countries are also studying the possibility of constructing a high dam in the Saptakoshi River. Nepal has agreed to India’s proposal to construct the dam so as to control floods in Bihar. The feasibility study report has not been finalised yet.

Locals of Nepal side have protested the proposal arguing it would affect their settlements too.
