Kathmandu Ring Road expansion to resume only after site clearance

File: Expanded section of Ring Road in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, June 12

The government is preparing to resume the Ring Road expansion project once with an additional caution.

This time in the expansion of Kalanki-Balaju-Maharajgunj section, the government is preparing to begin the expansion works only after ‘clearing the site’, or removing structures on the roadside.

Doing so would avoid disputes with locals and subsequent obstructions, hopes the Department of Roads. Officials of the Department say they learned the lesson from problems occurred during the expansion of Chabahil-Jorpati and Kalanki-Nagdhunga roads.

Meanwhile, the government also made a policy decision about the issue in the budget announcement for the next fiscal year. A recent amendment to the Public Procurement Regulation also mentions that works cannot begin unless the construction site is ready.

The government plans to begin the expansion works in the next fiscal year. The two lane road will be expanded to eight lanes.

The Department has already published a notice to remove structures built on the road’s land.

Rs 1.81 billion was been allocated for the project in the budget.

Department not to repeat mistakes of Koteshwar-Kalanki section

Meanwhile, the Department says it will not repeat errors made in the expansion of Koteshwar-Kalanki section of the Ring Road. After the expansion of the first section was over, stakeholders had raised security concerns.
