‘Serious negligence’ in Ring Road expansion: Experts urge govt to redo some sections

Kathmandu, May 9

A team consisting of experts has found ‘serious negligence’ in the recent Ring Road expansion project. They have, hence, suggested that the government redo some of the works.

The Chinese government had expanded and improved the Koteshwar-Kalanki section of the road in Kathmandu. It was handed over to the Nepal government in January.

The team formed by the Department of Roads has submitted its report to the government recently, recommending that the government add some infrastructures to ensure safety of passengers and pedestrians.

Chief of the Road and Traffic Unit in the Department, Deep Barahi, says the panel has suggested changing the road which is built as an expressway into an urban road. In particular, it has urged the government to work on junctions, adding zebra crossings and pedestrian bridges.

Currently, there are six crossings and three pedestrian bridges along the 10.39 km section.

Meanwhile, the Department says it will not let the Chinese government commit the same mistakes in the second phase of the project.
