Kathmandu, September 2

The government is preparing to widen the Tinkune-Airport-Tilganga section of Ring Road in Kathmandu to 12 lanes. Currently, the road’s width is only seven metres and it has two lanes. After the expansion, its width will be 62 metres.

The government says the road just outside of the country’s only international airport will be a model urban road. The Department of Roads has planned to use Nepali human resources, technology and investment in the project.

Chief of the department’s Federal Road Supervision and Monitoring Office, Rajendra Kumar Sharma, says the department is currently finalising a design for the project. The engineering preparations including the designing will be over by mid-September, according to him.

The expanded road will have dedicated service lanes, cycle lanes and pedestrian pathways.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government is assisting Nepal to expand the Kalanki-Maharajgunj section of the Ring Road. Earlier, the northern neighbour had widened the Koteshwar-Kalanki section also.
