Vivo Y53s phone review: A great phone, yet it will lose to similar other phones’ presence in Nepal

Often outlooked compared to Mi, Samsung, and OnePlus in the mid-range category, Vivo phones have been continuously competing with them for the bragging rights in the Nepali market.

There are some good smartphones from Vivo in the market and Y53s is now added to that list. With this, Vivo has brought another feature-packed mid-range smartphone to Nepal. Vivo Y53s, along with Vivo V21 and V21e, provides an abundance of features for its users. Yet, with Mi 11 Lite already in the market, it can be a serious problem for Vivo Y53s.

So, let’s get into the features of Vivo Y53s.

Vivo Y53s comes with a waterdrop notch display with 8.38mm (0.30 inch) thickness and weighs around 190 grams. This device has 6.58 inches of IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2,408*1,080 pixels. It also has a colour gamut that provides a wide and immersive view for both videos and games.

The phone comes with an eye-protection mode that filters out harmful blue light to prevent eye strain. This device has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which has been integrated with the power button. It also has a face wake system that enables the user to quickly unlock the device.

Camera

Vivo Y53s comes with a triple camera setup on its back. The main 64MP camera has been housed together with a 2MP bokeh camera and another 2MP super macro camera. The front-facing is a 16MP selfie camera. Both front and rear cameras can record videos at 1080p.

It has inbuilt camera features like super-night mode for splendid night shots, super-night selfie mode that balances the light and adjusts the noise while taking selfies at night. In the video department, the rear camera is equipped with the Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) system that lets you capture stable videos whether you are walking, cycling, or running.

The camera setting can be a little upsetting to the users as MI Note 10 series (Note 10s, Note 10 Pro, and Note 10) provides a better camera setup at a lower price range, and also all these phones can record 4K videos. Even Samsung M31 can record videos in 4K and is cheaper than Vivo Y53s.

Performance and battery life

Vivo Y53s runs on Android 11 with Funtouch 11.1 on top and is powered by a Mediatek Helio G80 processor. The multi-turbo 5.0 in this device can focus on optimising core senses that can reduce stuttering and lag in games.

The device has a battery backup of 5000mAh that supports 33W fast charging. With this feature, the user can get a 70% charge in just 41 minutes. The phone has an AI-driven power-saving technology and the company claims that with a single full charge, the phone can do 14.3 hours of online HD movie streaming, binge-watching, or 7.05 hours of resource-intensive gameplay.

Storage and connectivity

Vivo Y53s comes with 8GG RAM and 128GB internal storage which can be extended up to 1TB through a micro SD card. Another interesting thing about this device is up to 4GB of the device’s idle ROM space can be used as an extended RAM. This will allow the device to perform even smoother. This is something you have not seen in a smartphone before.

This device supports a dual-channel Wi-Fi 802.11 and has Bluetooth 5.0 for further connectivity. It also supports USB Type-C 2.0 and also has a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio.

The price for Vivo Y53s in Nepal is Rs 34,999 and along with the phone, the buyer will get a headset, Type-C USB cable, USB power adapter, SIM eject tool, and protective case.

Verdict

With the given price range, it is a direct competition to the mid-range smartphones: Samsung and Mi. Though having new features like RAM extension and EIS, it falls short on many aspects compared to phones of a similar range. With the exact price range, Mi 11 Lite reigns supreme over Vivo Y53s.

Mi 11 Lite has a better performance in almost every sector. It has better CPU performance, gaming performance, camera quality, higher refresh rate, higher-touch sampling rate, and efficient battery consumption. Also, Mi 11 Lite has an AMOLED display which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 compared to Vivo Y53s’s IPS LCD. Though it is always a topic for debate, AMOLED display has been mostly preferred over IPS LCD.

With Mi 11 Lite already on the market, it can be a serious problem for Vivo Y53s.
