The government has reported a sharp rise in the number of resignations of government school teachers.
Whereas 797 teachers had resigned from their positions in the last fiscal year (2020/21), the number of resignations has already reached 1,139 within the first seven months of the current fiscal year, informs Rastriya Kitabkhana (Shikshak), a government agency that keeps a record of government school teachers.
“Between November 2021 and January 2022, almost 25 to 30 teachers submitted their resignations in a day on average,” the office’s director-general Ram Raj Khakurel.
Khakurel says there could be several reasons for the increase. “Currently, local governments have begun giving attractive offers to former teachers to work at the local level. They are proposing facilities worth Rs 100,000 to Rs 500,000,” Khakurel says, “This has been seen as the major reason.”
Two other reasons are the Supreme Court directive to teachers involved in political parties to quit, and their reluctance to obey transfer orders.
