Nepali, Chinese officials fail to resolve ‘label’ dispute

Kathmandu, January 16

Customs officials of Nepal and Tibet of China have failed to resolve a recent dispute ensued between them after Chinese officials demanded that Nepal export its products to China with the labels written in the Chinese language.

In a bid to resolve the issue and resume the cross-country trade, the officials had recently met in Kathmandu, but the three-day meeting did not make any solution, informs Punya Bikram Khadka, the chief of Rasuwagadhi Customs Office of Nepal.

During the meeting, Nepali officials reiterated that English labels should be accepted as per the law here, but the Chinese counterparts said their citizens could not understand English, hence the label should be in Chinese. The meeting has forwarded the issue to a higher level for further discussion, according to Khadka.
