A high-level official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Nepal government is drafting a law so as to ensure citizenship right of non-residential Nepalis.

Joint-Secretary Krishna Prasad Dhakal told a meeting of NRN leaders in Belgium recently that the drafting was underway in line with the demand of Nepali diaspora.

“The constitution has guaranteed citizenship of NRNs with some economic, social and cultural rights,” Dhakal said, “We are drafting a law on how that provision can be implemented.”

During the drafting process, the government identified some shortcomings in existing NRN laws and they would be amended accordingly, informed Dhakal.

The official informed that the government recently established a division within the Ministry to deal with issues of NRNs, adding, “We have considered your problems and demands seriously.”

Meanwhile, officials and NRN leaders also discussed challenges seen in mobilisation of NRNs’ investment in development projects in Nepal.

Nepal’s Ambassador to Belgium, Lok Bahadur Thapa, was also present at the meeting.
