NCP’s Sapkota poised to get elected speaker unopposed

Agni Prasad Sapkota of the Nepal Communist Party waves as the party files his nomination for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives, in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

Kathmandu, January 21

The Nepal Communist Party’s Agni Prasad Sapkota is all set to become the speaker of the House of Representatives.

As per its schedule of the election, the Federal Parliament Secretariat received only one nomination for the position within the allocated time, Parliament’s General Secretary Manohar Prasad Bhattarai informs. However, Sapkota will not be declared the winner today.

Sapkota’s election to the position will be announced during the House meeting to be held coming Sunday, January 26.

Earlier, the NCP’s Subas Chandra Nembang had filed his nomination as a proposer. The party’s Dev Gurung and Onsari Gharti and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal’s Laxman Lal Karna had seconded it.

The main opposition Nepali Congress decided not to field its candidacy as the NCP has sufficient votes required to elect its candidate the speaker. Though the party expected the NCP to support it for the deputy speaker, it is unlikely.
