Two chairmen of the ruling Nepal Communist Party have almost agreed to nominated Agni Sapkota for the speaker’s election. If the party endorses the two leaders’ decision, Sapkota will be elected the chief of the House of Representatives.

During a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders in Baluwatar this morning, the agreement was made and the two leaders called the secretariat meeting for 4 pm today to endorse the decision, according to sources.

For the past few months, the two leaders were divided over who should be the party’s candidate for the speaker. The position is vacant since the resignation of Krishna Bahadur Mahara in October after he was accused of an attempt to rape.

Whereas Oli had been pressing the party to go for Subas Chandra Nembang, Dahal was adamant that the former Maoist Centre side should get a chance as Mahara belonged to the faction. Among the former Maoist leaders, his first choice was Sapkota.

Meanwhile, incumbent deputy speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe had also staked her claim in the position.
