Kabul Attack fallout: Nepal not to issue work permits for Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya

Kathmandu, June 23

The government has decided not to issue fresh work permits for Nepali seeking employment in four countries including Afghanistan.

The decision comes two days after 13 Nepalis were killed in a suicide bomb attack on a bus carrying security personnel in Kabul.

A meeting of Council of Ministers on Thursday evening decided not to issue permits for Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, the government’s spokesperson said.

The government had in 2006 decided to allow Nepalis to work in limited sectors in Afghanistan. According to government figures more than 8,641 Nepalis have gone to Afghanistan for employment. However, more than 10,000 Nepalis are believed to have reached Afghanistan illegally.
