Fifteen days after the Pahalgam attack, the Indian government launched a missile strike on Pakistan, early on Wednesday morning. According to the Indian Army, the strike targeted terrorist zones in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The Indian Army has named the operation Operation Sindoor.
A statement issued by the Indian government reads: ” India exercised its right to respond and pre-empt as well as deter more such cross-border attacks. These actions were measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible. They focused on dismantling the terrorist infrastructure and disabling terrorists likely to be sent across to India.”
According to Dainik Bhaskar, an Indian media outlet, India launched airstrikes targeting terrorists in Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Gulpur, Kotli, Bhimber, Sialkot, Muridke, Chak Amru, and Bahawalpur, resulting in the deaths of 30 individuals.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rejected India’s allegations and stated that Pakistan would respond appropriately to the attack.
“The treacherous enemy has launched a cowardly attack on five locations within Pakistan. This heinous act of aggression will not go unpunished. Pakistan reserves the absolute right to respond decisively to this unprovoked Indian attack — a resolute response is already underway. The entire nation stands united behind its armed forces, and our morale and resolve remain unshaken,” Sharif wrote on X. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the brave officers and soldiers of Pakistan. The people and armed forces of Pakistan are fully prepared to confront and defeat any threat with strength and determination. The enemy will never be allowed to achieve its malicious aims.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s spokesperson has called on both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint.
U.S. President Donald Trump also expressed concern over the attack.
“It is a shame,” Trump said in the Oval Office, adding that he “hopes it ends very, very quickly.”
