Nepali lawmakers have urged Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to support Nepal’s efforts to seek compensation for the damage caused by the devastating floods in Rasuwa.
The Nepali representatives met Tobgay on the sidelines of the ongoing South Asian Regional Parliamentary Forum in Bhutan.
During the meeting, Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmakers Ashish Gajurel and Ashok Chaudhary briefed the Bhutanese prime minister on the loss of lives, property and infrastructure caused by the floods in Rasuwa.
Gajurel said Nepal’s contribution to global climate change is negligible, yet the country is bearing the severe consequences of climate-related disasters.
He argued that affected countries need more than sympathy and called for compensation and fair support.
Nepal has already formally approached the Loss and Damage Fund Board, seeking compensation for losses and damage caused by the Rasuwa floods. The government sent a formal letter to the board on August 31.
Gajurel and Chaudhary informed Tobgay about Nepal’s initiative and sought Bhutan’s support for Nepal’s efforts at the international level for climate justice and compensation.
Tobgay expressed his sorrow over the disaster in Nepal and pledged to take initiatives for necessary support.
He also emphasised the need to provide compensation to countries that have contributed little to climate change but are bearing a disproportionate share of its impacts.
The Nepali representatives said cooperation among South Asian countries would be important in pushing for greater climate justice and support for countries affected by climate-related disasters.
