Kathmandu, April 9

Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the CPN (UML), KP Sharma Oli, has been released from police custody. Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, informed that he was handed over to his family at the hospital.

According to the police, any further decisions regarding his movement will be made by doctors based on his current health condition.

Oli was arrested on March 28 at his residence in Gundu on charges related to the suppression of the Gen Z movement. Due to complex health issues, he had been receiving treatment at the T.U. Teaching Hospital while in custody.

Following his arrest, his wife, Radhika Shakya, filed a writ of habeas corpus at the Supreme Court, arguing that he was being held in illegal detention.

On the evening of April 6, the Supreme Court ordered that the investigation into former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and then-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak be concluded by Thursday, April 9. The court further directed that if the investigation could not be completed by Thursday, they should be released under specific conditions.

Following the police’s decision to release him from custody, his wife, Radhika Shakya, arrived at the T.U. Teaching Hospital to receive him.
