All parties assure support to govt in border talks with India

An all-party meeting at the prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar, on Wednesday, May 14, 2020.

Kathmandu, May 14

All political parties represented in the federal parliament have extended their support to the government in the initiatives it takes in holding diplomatic talks with India so as to solve the recently surfaced border dispute.

In a meeting called by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the leaders together said the disputed land in Kalapani, via which India has constructed a link road to Manasarovar claiming it belongs to India, was a Nepali territory, assuring they would support the government efforts to reclaim it, informed Minister for Foreign Affairs, Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, after the meeting.

They also suggested that the government would need to take all the citizens into confidence while taking such initiatives.

The leaders complained that the efforts made by the government so far could not be effective enough. The main opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said the government should focus on early talks instead of issuing statements one after another.

Likewise, former prime minister Baburam Bhattarai advised the government to establish a high-level political commission to initiate the talks with India.

In response, the prime minister thanked everyone for their support and assured the government would move ahead taking them into confidence. He said the government was currently waiting for India’s response to a diplomatic note it sent on the issue.
