Kathmandu, April 5

Once again, Nepal’s poultry industry is in crisis as 13 districts across four provinces reported the outbreak of bird flu.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has urged farmers to stay alert against any impact of the outbreak on their farms.

Dr Ram Nandan Tiwari, the director-general of the Department of Livestock Services, says 13 districts of Province 1, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki have reported the infection.

The districts reporting the infection are Morang, Udayapur and Sunsari in Province 1; Bara, Parsa and Dhanusha in Madhesh; Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Makawanpur and Sindhupalchok of Bagmati; and Kaski of Gandaki.

“The level of bird flu infection shows it is on the rise. Hence, we have also speeded up tests, disinfection and culling of infected fowls,” Tiwari says, “But, it’s not out of control, yet high alert is necessary.”

Accordingly, the department has instructed businesspersons, according to him.
