NCP lawmaker challenges ‘unfair tradition’ by performing her mom’s death rituals

Nepal Communist Party leader Usha Kala Rai performs the death rituals of her mother, in Kathmandu, in January 2019.

Kathmandu, January 10

Province 1 Assembly member Usha Kala Rai has shaved her head to perform the post-death rituals of her mother.

Traditionally, Nepali society does not allow daughters to shave heads and perform such rituals. Families without sons usually seek the help of outsiders for such events.

However, Rai, a leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, decided to challenge the tradition by doing it on her own, according to her husband and former minister Sher Bahadur Tamang.

“It is her own decision, and we second her,” Tamang says, adding some relatives, however, had suggested requesting other family members or outsiders for the rituals, which Rai denied.

Laxmi, 75, died of pneumonia at Grande International Hospital of Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Tamang informs that his wife will conclude the rituals on the fifth day and go back to their home district in Khotang.
