KU padlocked for three weeks, but no talks yet

Kathmandu, August 28

It has been three weeks since trade unions of professors and other staff of the Kathmandu University padlocked offices of the university’s vice-chancellor, registrar and some deans. However, the concerned parties are yet to begin formal negotiations to resolve the issue.

Hence, the stalemate at the university is likely to continue for the next few weeks.

The university has formed a three-member team led by School of Management dean Bijay KC to hold the talks. Its members include professor Balkundra Luintel and Administration Management Service Division chief Mukunda Upadhyaya.

The protesting side says the committee does not have sufficient power to negotiate and it is not convinced that the university leadership will implement the agreements forged by the panel. The panel’s coordinator KC, however, claims informal talks are underway.

Meanwhile, KU Professors’ Association chair Bed Mani Dahal says the padlocking will continue till their demands are met.
