Yadav threatens to scrap Nepal constitution on the strength of Federal Alliance movement

Kathmandu, May 22

Upendra Yadav, president of the Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, a partner in the Federal Alliance that has been spearheading a movement to make the Nepali state address its demands, said on Sunday they will scrap the constitution, promulgated through a popularly-elected Constituent Assembly, on the strength of their movement.

Riders for talks

Yadav said they will not sit for talks with the KP Sharma Oli government unless the government decides to rewrite the constitution and implement agreements reached with them. He was speaking at a programme that Reporters’ Club Nepal had organised.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli himself walked out of talks between us and the government, he said, adding: The government is now trying to mislead the country and the people.

Yadav said: Rewriting the constitution is all about removing discriminatory and erroneous words from the charter and replacing them with palatable ones. It’s about removing discriminatory provisions and replacing them with just ones.

Warning

He warned their movement will take a ‘new turn’ if the government tries to suppress it. Yadav said: Racist ideologies split Germany and India.

“The unexpected will happen if the KP Sharma Oli and company do not do a course correction,” he warned, adding that their movement is for strengthening national unity and for saving the country.
