Reconstruction of nine-storey palace at Basantapur begins with Chinese support

Kathmandu, August 15

Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Yang on Tuesday jointly laid foundation stone for the reconstruction of historic nine-storey palace at Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu.

The archaeological structure destroyed in the 2015 earthquake is being built with 100 per cent Chinese financial assistance, says the Department of Archaeology’s chief Bhesh Narayan Dahal. It is estimated that the project costs around Rs 160 million.

“We have set the objective of restoring this palace in its exact old form,” Dahal says, adding the Department will supervise the project to ensure that and supply necessary materials.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jitendra Narayan Dev, Nepali Ambassador to China Leela Mani Paudyal and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yu Hong were also present on the occasion.

The project was launched today on the occasion of Chinese Vice-Premier is in Nepal on an official visit.

Meanwhile, tWang is schedule to hold a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Bijay Kumar Gachhadar today. Gachhadar will host a luncheon in his counterpart’s honour.

Likewise, he will also call on former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal and KP Sharma Oli.

Nepal and China will sign three bilateral agreements today itself.
