Police suspect Biplav Maoists’ role in explosion at Jhapa local government office

A joint ward office of Birtamod Municipality after an explosive went off, in Jhapa district, on Monday, August 12, 2019.

Birtamod, August 12

An improvised explosive device went off at the joint office of wards 7, 8 and 9 of Birtamod municipality in Jhapa district of eastern Nepal in the wee hours of Monday.

Police have suspected that cadres of the banned Maoist party led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ planted the explosive.

An experts’ team from the Nepal Army has said the explosive was a ‘pressure cooker bomb’ made at home. After learning about the incident, an army barrack in Charaali had sent the team to the incident site in Garamani at around 4:30 am today.

The District Police Office had also sent a team under the command of SP Dinesh Raj Mainali to look into the case.
