Kathmandu, November 22

The finance department head of the Nepal Communist Party led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ has been arrested.

Prem Darnal aka Bikalpa and the department’s member Sanjeev Nepali aka Suwarna have been arrested at Nakhkhu of Lalitpur on Friday afternoon, according to police.

Citing its activities amounted to terrorism, the government has banned the party for over a year now.

The party’s spokesperson Khadka Bahadur Bishwakarma ‘Prakanda’ informs they were arrested while they were in a meeting with local traders. Issuing a statement on Saturday, Bishwakarma said the law enforcers held them in a criminal manner that looked like an abduction, demanding their unconditional release.

The police arrested them on the false charge of extortion, Bishwakarma said, adding they were active in the party’s financial affairs as per its central policy. He said the arrest violated people’s right to political freedom.

The party also warned of retaliation if they were not released soon.
