Pant murder probe: Mystery continues as DNA tests deny SP Bista, his son’s role

A candlelight vigil organised to demand justice for Nirmala Pant, at Maitighar Mandala, on Thursday, September 13, 2018.

Kathmandu, September 30

The mystery behind the rape and murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Pant in Kanchanpur district has remained unsolved as DNA tests of key suspects turned negative.

Following pressure from the victim’s family and neighbours, police had tested DNA of key suspects including SP Dilli Raj Bista, his son Kiran and Bhimdatta Municipality Mayor Surendra Bista’s nephew Aayush.

SP Kuber Bahadur Kathayat, who is leading the District Police Office after SP Bista’s suspension, confirms that the results of the tests did not help police with the investigation.

However, an investigation team formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs had claimed SP Bista contributed to destroying the evidence. Following that, he was suspended.

Earlier, the DNA test of another suspect Dilip Singh Bista had also proved negative. He was released after that.
