Now onwards, police will nab litterbugs in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, December 27

Kathmandu Metropolitan City says it has asked Nepal Police to cooperate with the local government in order to nab and take action against people who throw garbage in public places.

Environment Department of the City has recently written to the Kathmandu District Administration Office proposing police mobilisation for action against litterbugs.

“The Chief District Officer has agreed to implement our proposal. Now, on-duty police will help us control pollution,” says the Department’s chief Hari Bahadur Kunwar.

Kunwar says the Solid Waste Management Act has authorised local governments to mobilise police; hence the police personnel will arrest the litterbugs now onwards. The law allows them to detain for 24 hours for investigation.

“We tried to control waste on our own, but failed,” the official says, “Now, we will punish people polluting public places with the support of police.”

Besides, litter louts can be fined from Rs 500 to Rs 100,000.
