
Kathmandu, June 30
Counting of votes continues on Friday morning, two days after polling in the historic second round of local elections held in provinces 1,5 and seven.
As of Friday morning, results have already been declared in six local bodies, out of which the Nepali Congress has won three while, the UML and the Maoist Centre have one two and one respectively.
The Nepali Congress and the UML are in neck-and-neck competition in most of the cities while the Maoists have shown some influence over voters in rural municipalities. In Biratnagar Metropolitan City, the Nepali Congress’ Bhim Parajuli leades the race for Mayor, in Itahari sub-metropolis, where the newly formed Sajha Party had fielded candidates, Rohit Prasai of the NC is in the lead. In Dharan also, the Nepali Congress is leading in the race for the city’s mayor.
The UML’s candidates have maintained lead in the vote count for mayor in Butwal and Ghorahi.
