NCP’s MCC task force holds maiden meeting

L-R: Jhala Nath Khanal, Bhim Rawal and Pradeep Kumar Gyawali

Kathmandu, February 3

The three-member task force formed by the ruling Nepal Communist Party to study and collect feedback on the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation agreement signed between the governments of Nepal and the United States in 2017 held its first meeting on Monday.

All three members of the panel–Jhala Nath Khanal, Bhim Rawal and Pradeep Gyawali–were present during the meeting held in Kathmandu, according to an NCP source. It has been learned that the leaders today discussed what reference materials they would need to study to prepare its report. The party has told the team to submit its report with a recommendation in the next 10 days.

The agreement is currently awaiting Parliament’s approval to get implemented. However, the government has not tabled it in the House owing to a fierce debate inside the ruling party.

Now, with the task force beginning its assignment, the party will make a formal decision about whether the government should forward the deal for approval only after a few weeks, according to leaders.
