Police release Nawaraj Silwal ‘after recording statements’

Kathmandu, April 24

Nepal Police Headquarters said it released detained DIG Nawaraj Silwal after recording statements about his alleged involvement in a document forgery.

SSP Sarvendra Khanal, the Headquarters Spokesperson, told Onlinekhabar that a police team left him at his home in Lalitpur district late afternoon today.

Khanal, however, said the police organisation had not been informed about the Supreme Court order that called the Nepal Police to produce Silwal before the Court today itself.

Silwal was detained from his lawyer’s house in Baluwatar this morning.

Meanwhile, Silwal’s lawyer, senior advocate Shambhu Thapa, also confirmed Silwal’s release, adding he, however, reached the Court from the Police Headquarters to obey the order.

Thapa said he was not detained by police as reported earlier, but had been to the Headquarters as the lawyer to Silwal to witness the recording of statements.

Police had videotaped the statements, Thapa informed.

Earlier, the Headquarters had ordered Silwal to furnish a clarification after he boycotted a meeting of high-ranking police officials called by new Inspector General Prakash Aryal.

On the other hand, the Headquarters had launched an investigation into the reported document forgery by Silwal for the performance evaluation. He has been accused of putting his name in the then DIG Aryal’s performance papers and submitting them to the court in a bid to secure the top post for himself.

He had reportedly denied giving a statement to the probe panel in this regard.
