Medical college owner Prasain : Medical education council deputy chief demanded Rs 200 million in bribe

Kathmandu, January 8

The owner of the Jhapa-based B&C Medical College Durga Prasain has accused medical education council deputy chief Shree Krishna Giri of demanding Rs 20 million in bribe from him.

Prasain, who organised a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday, said that Giri demanded the money in exchange for the council’s affiliation with B&C.  According to him, the two met at Dwarika Hotel in Kathmandu on December 1. “He said that he had to give some money to leaders above him and demanded Rs 200 million,” added Prasain. “I told him that because of anti-money laundering measures, it’s difficult to move that kind of cash around,” he said.

Prasain further said that Giri demanded that he transfer 10 per cent share of the hospital to one of his relatives based in Jhapa. “I don’t have a recording of the conversation but I can talk to him face-to-face,” he added. He told mediapersons that he informed NCP leaders about the conversation. “The council should give its approval to B&C or the government should buy its assets,” said Prasain.
