Kathmandu, January 6

The Ministry of Urban Development is preparing a design for the construction of a landfill site at Bancharedanda of Nuwakot district in a bid to ensure permanent solution to the Kathmandu Valley garbage problem.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers around a month ago had decided to hand over the responsibility of the construction of the landfill site to the Ministry, putting a full stop to the longstanding dispute on who to own up the responsibility for the construction.

According to Ministry spokesperson Krishna Prasad Dawadi, the Ministry has been working on designing the project.

Presently, waste collected from 18 local units in the Kathmandu Valley including the Kathmandu Metropolitan City is being managed at Sisdole of Nuwakot. The new location chosen for the landfill site lies two kilometre away from Sisdole.

Earlier, the KMC had denied taking the responsibility to undertake the construction project citing that its responsibility was only to collect and manage waste in a site readied by the central government.
