Kathmandu, January 6
Kathmandu has recorded its lowest minimum temperature so far this year.
According to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the minimum temperature in Kathmandu was measured at 3.0 degrees Celsius at 8:45 am. Meteorologists at the division said this is the lowest minimum temperature recorded in the capital so far this year. Earlier, at 5:45 am, the minimum temperature in Kathmandu stood at 3.4 degrees Celsius.
Compared to Kathmandu, Lalitpur’s Sanepa area recorded an even lower temperature. Meteorologist Ujjwal Upadhyay said the minimum temperature in Sanepa was measured at 2.8 degrees Celsius this morning, which is 0.5 degrees Celsius lower than the previous day.
Although Kathmandu feel slightly warmer, meteorologists said the minimum temperature has been consistently declining over the past few days, intensifying the cold.
Kathmandu recorded a minimum temperature of 4.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 4 degrees on Sunday, and 3.5 degrees Celsius on Monday. In Nepal, official minimum temperature data are measured and released daily at 8:45 am.
Meteorologist David Dhakal noted that while today’s reading is the lowest minimum temperature recorded so far this year in the Kathmandu Valley, it is still slightly above the long-term average. According to him, the average minimum temperature in Kathmandu on January 6 is 2.2 degrees Celsius.
Dhakal added that although the minimum temperature has been steadily declining in recent days, there has been no significant fluctuation in maximum temperatures. In the Tarai/Madhes districts, maximum temperatures saw a slight rise yesterday due to sunny conditions. Fog continues to form in the Tarai districts during the morning, clearing gradually after noon, and similar conditions are likely to persist for the next few days, he said.
