Electricity supply was disrupted in Kathmandu and parts of central Nepal on Friday after problems occurred in both circuits of the Khapti-Dhalkebar 220 kV transmission line while another transmission line was under a scheduled shutdown.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the Hetauda-Dhalkebar 400 kV transmission line is currently under construction, and the 132 kV transmission lines were under a scheduled shutdown for stringing work. During this period, both circuits of the Khapti-Dhalkebar 220 kV transmission line developed problems, disrupting electricity supply to Kathmandu Valley and other parts of central Nepal.
The NEA said the Hetauda-Amlekhgunj and Kamane-Amlekhgunj 132 kV transmission lines had been under scheduled shutdown since 6:40 am. During that period, the power system was being operated through the Dhalkebar-Khurkot-Khimti-Bhaktapur-Syuchatar transmission route.
At 8:52 am, Circuit 1 of the Khapti-Dhalkebar 220 kV transmission line tripped after its conductor snapped. Circuit 2 of the same transmission line then tripped at 9:18 am, disconnecting the transmission link and disrupting electricity supply to Kathmandu Valley and other parts of central Nepal.
The NEA used an alternative transmission route to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible. Power was supplied through the Mainhiya substation via the Sampatia substation in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The NEA said electricity supply to Kathmandu Valley resumed at 9:44 am through the alternative arrangement.
A technical team is currently conducting an on-site inspection of the affected transmission system and carrying out necessary repair and maintenance work. The NEA said efforts are underway to identify the problem in the transmission line and restore the system to normal operation.
