Kathmandu Metropolitan awards Rs 600 Million contract for dry waste management

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has awarded an annual revenue contract worth Rs 608.7 million (including tax) for the collection and sale of dry waste generated alongside household garbage.

The contract was divided into seven regions, with each section tendered through separate competitive bidding. According to engineer Ram Prasad Nepal, the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Region No. 7 has already begun operations, while preparations are underway to launch the service in other regions as well. He clarified that the contracted amounts are exclusive of tax.

In Region No. 7 alone, 101,355 kilograms of dry waste were collected in the Nepali month of Baisakh 2082. This region includes 10 wards—12, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 27. Waste is collected via the MRF, with daily dry waste collection estimated at 43.5 tonnes. The highest daily collection during Baisakh was 3,827 kg, and the lowest was 2,534 kg.

Collection in this region began on Chaitra 11, 2081 BS, with 1,377 kg of waste gathered on the first day. In that month, the total collection reached 60,660 kg. Glorious Multipurpose and Supplies secured the contract for Region 7 with an annual bid of Rs 6.2 million.

To streamline household waste disposal, the city divided 32 wards into seven regions. Each region is equipped with a waste transfer center, and MRFs are operated under the Revenue Contract Procedure 2079 BS. The city invited tenders through public notice.

Other contract awards include:

  • Region 1 (Wards 2, 3, 4, 5, 7): NEPSEMEC Services Pvt. Ltd. secured the contract for Rs 6.64 million annually. Estimated daily waste collection: 48 tonnes.
  • Region 2 (Wards 1, 11, 28, 29, 30): Practical Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd. bid Rs 5.16 million annually. Estimated daily collection: 36.5 tonnes.
  • Region 3 (Wards 6, 8, 9): Creative Sanitation Pvt. Ltd. was awarded the contract for Rs 5.54 million. Estimated daily collection: 38 tonnes.
  • Region 4 (Wards 16, 17, 26): Mechi Poly Industries won with the highest bid of Rs 11.5 million. Estimated daily collection: 55.5 tonnes.
  • Region 5 (Wards 13, 14, 15): Nepal Energy Development Company secured the contract for Rs 9.65 million. Estimated daily collection: 49 tonnes.
  • Region 6 (Wards 10, 31, 32): Poly Waste Management was awarded a Rs 9.18 million contract. Estimated daily collection: 54 tonnes.
