Kathmandu, August 28

The ongoing drive of the Kathmandu metropolitan city to demolish illegal structures at commercial buildings has witnessed a new finding on Sunday that Kathmandu Mall, a key commercial complex in the city, was entirely illegal.

After finding a section of the building was illegally built, the local government demolished the part last week. Following that, the building owner, Employee Provident Fund (EPF), held a meeting with the city government on Sunday.

During the discussion, the city officials presented details of the building construction, according to which the building’s blueprint was never approved. Neither had the fund obtained the local government’s approval for the building construction project.

The fund for the first time submitted an application for blueprint approval in 2000 and for the second time in 2018, according to the officials. The application was kept pending both times when the fund continued construction work and rented it to the businesses.

As the 2000 application had proposed parking spaces on two floors including the basement at Kathmandu Mall, the two parties have now agreed to provide the parking space on two floors, according to officials.

Following that, the city government will approve the blueprint.
