House to quiz Home Minister over Sarlahi firing

Ram Bahadur Thapa addresses a Parliament meeting

Kathmandu, June 23

The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament has decided to quiz Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa on the death of Kumar Paudel, a leader of the Netra Bikam Chand ‘Biplav’-led Maoist party, in a police firing in Lalbandi of Sarlahi district on Thursday.

The panel decided to ask the Minister to explain the killing after its member from the ruling Nepal Communist Party, Janardan Sharma, suspected that Paudel’s killing was extrajudicial.

“We don’t object to the actions taken within the line of constitution and law. But, as I have received information from people that he was murdered cruelly,” Sharma told the meeting, “Now, the truth must be revealed to the public.”

Sharma also expressed his fear that such incidents would provoke the dissatisfied mass of people against the federal democratic republican system.

“If we cannot correct them, if we cannot take action,” he said, “it will not take us to the right direction.”

Earlier, the panel had decided to summon Home Minister Thapa to the Monday meeting to discuss the government’s preparation for disaster management.

But owing to Sharma’s concern, the panel will also discuss the Thursday incident, according to the panel’s chair Shashi Shrestha.

Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission had also said it would look into the case.
