Kathmandu, April 28
Meteorologists have predicted moderate to heavy rainfall today and tomorrow, advising people to avoid travelling on high-risk roads at night.
According to forecasters, rainfall is expected to intensify and spread starting tonight. There is a higher chance of rain on April 29 compared to April 28.
Heavy rainfall is also expected on Tuesday evening and night in the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding areas.
Meteorologist Ujjwal Upadhyaya stated that the current weather system will bring rainfall to the Kathmandu Valley and nearby areas, as well as nearly all of the eastern region up to the Mechi River. On Wednesday and Thursday, intermittent rainfall is expected to continue from Mechi in the east to the Trishuli–Kaligandaki rivers in the west.
The rain may trigger flash floods in small streams and rivers, landslides in hilly areas, and road blockages.
Upadhyaya advised to avoid travelling at night on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the Tribhuvan Highway, Prithvi Highway, Siddhartha Highway, Pasang Lhamu Highway, and BP Highway.”
Two pre-monsoon systems, one near Nepal’s eastern region (toward India’s Uttarakhand) and one near the western region (toward Himachal Pradesh), have merged after entering Nepal following a period of rising temperatures.
“Individually, these two systems are not particularly large, but after merging and combining with a local-level system within Nepal, the risk of heavy rainfall has increased in certain areas,” Upadhyaya said.
He added that between the Mechi and Karnali rivers, there is a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall for one to two hours in one or two locations, which could cause flooding in areas with poor drainage.
Risk zones
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has marked districts in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces with yellow alerts for April 28, and all seven provinces for April 29, urging people to stay updated on weather conditions before going about their activities.
Meteorologist Saroj Pudasaini said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces over both days, with moderate snowfall or rain also possible in the Himalayan regions.
On Tuesday, moderate rainfall is expected across all seven provinces. One or two locations in the hilly and Himalayan areas of Koshi Province, and in the hilly areas of Gandaki Province, may see heavy rain or snow.
On Wednesday, many areas in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces could see moderate rain or snow accompanied by thunder and lightning. At the same time, some parts of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim may also receive precipitation.
On that same day, one or two locations in Koshi and Madhesh provinces, as well as hilly areas of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, may see heavy rainfall.
