Nepal Motion Picture Association is looking at legal measures against Kathmandu metropolitan city Mayor Balen Shah, who has banned the screening of all Indian films in the city.

Shah banned all Indian films from being screened in the city from Monday after the makers of Adipurush did not change the controversial dialogue in the film. He had given the filmmakers a three-day ultimatum to do so.

But distributors and film hall operators feel hard done by as they feel it is unfair that they cannot screen other Indian films.

“This sets a bad precedent and we are in talks with lawyers on how to move forward,” said Prajwal Rana of the association.

He said the association was looking if the city had the jurisdiction to ban the screening of a film.

Mayor Shah believes it falls under the city jurisdiction as the constitution has given the local government the right to protect national interests.

But another group within the association feels going to the court is not the right move and is calling for members to sit for talks with Shah to solve this matter internally.

As a sign of protest against Shah and other municipalities, the distributor of Adipurush on Monday decided to halt the screening of the film throughout Nepal.
