Govt halts issuing permits for Qatar jobs

Qatar is one of the most popular destinations for Nepali migrant workers.

Kathmandu, March 10

After the Qatari government decided to bar Nepalis from entering the country till the next notice in its bid to stop the spread of coronavirus infection, the government of Nepal has stopped issuing labour permits to the aspiring workers from Nepal who were planning to fly to Qatar soon.

The director general at Department of Foreign Employment, Kumar Dahal, says the decision to halt the permits was made in response to the Qatari government’s decision. In the past 10 days, 3,605 people received labour permits for Qatar, according to him. Most of them are yet to fly.

In the past two months, the department issued foreign employment permits to 117,633 people.

Earlier on Monday, the Nepali Embassy in Doha had urged Nepalis in Qatar not to meet people as far as possible.
