Government proposes to increase annual budget by 23 per cent for federalism implementation

Kathmandu, December 19

The top bureaucrat at Ministry of Finance says the Ministry is proposing to increase the annual budget for next fiscal year by 23 per cent from this year’s so as to effectively implement new federal structure of the country.

Finance Secretary Shankar Prasad Adhikari says the Ministry has begun preparations for the annual budget of 1 trillion and 570 billion for the next year. The amount is 22.75 per cent more than the size of annual budget for this year (Rs 1 trillion and 278 billion).

Adhikari was hopeful that the revenue collection could be increased by 30 per cent next year.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Society of Economic Journalists Nepal (SEJON), Adhikari said the Ministry would propose increasing the annual budget by Rs 100 billion every year for next three years to implement federalism.

Meanwhile, former finance secretaries Shantaraj Subedi and Rameshore Khanal commented that Adhikari’s plan looked too ambitious to implement as the government could not accomplish revenue target.
