Gandaki mayors angry after provincial govt didn’t consult them in project planning

A meeting of mayors of various municipalities of Gandaki province in Pokhara in September 2019.

Pokhara, September 9

A number of mayors from various municipalities in Gandaki province have expressed their anger against the provincial government, claiming the provincial government did not consult them in planning developmental activities in their jurisdictions.

They have warned that they will not let the provincial government continue the projects if the government doesn’t consult them in the future as well.

Speaking at a function in Pokhara, Bhirkot municipality mayor from Syangja district, Chhaya Ram Khanal, said he would not let the provincial government implement any project in the municipality unless the plan was prepared in consultation with him.

The mayors’ ire rose further as the province’s Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung did not show up at the function though he was invited in advance. Provincial speaker Netra Nath Adhikari also joined the function a few minutes before it wrapped up.

In his address, Adhikari stressed that the provincial and local governments should cooperate with each other in developmental works.
