Federal Parliament members undergo coronavirus test ahead of session commencement

Health workers collect swab samples from National Assembly member Komal Oli for a coronavirus PCR test, in Kathmandu, on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

Kathmandu, May 7

One day before the new session of the Federal Parliament begins, the government is testing all members of both houses of the legislative body for the novel coronavirus.

The lawmakers were called at the parliament in Naya Baneshwar to collect their throat swab samples for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests.

At first, the health workers from the National Public Health Laboratory are collecting the samples from National Assembly members. Following that, the samples will also be collected from the House of Representatives members. The Parliament Secretariat’s information officer Dasharath Dhamala says the sample collection will be over today itself.

Following the lawmakers, officials and staff involved in convening the house meetings including marshals, and journalists covering the meeting.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Business Advisory Committee in Parliament had requested the government to make arrangements for such a test. Accordingly, the Ministry of Health had mobilised a team.

The secretariat has already changed sitting arrangements in the meeting halls so as to maintain distance from each other. Likewise, the chairs, microphones, and other accessories have been disinfected.
