Kathmandu, November 13

The Election Commission has piled pressure on the government to amend the Election Act at the earliest so that it can conduct bypolls to fill vacant positions at local and provincial levels.

The Commission’s spokesperson Deepak Subedi says the constitutional body has been requesting the government time and again so that the vacant positions would be fulfilled as soon as possible.

As of now, 28 positions at local and provincial levels are vacant due to different reasons, he informs, adding the Commission is ready to conduct the elections on the date announced by the government after the amendment.

The Commission says it has been regularly updating the voters’ list to conduct elections at any time.

Meanwhile, the Commission once again demanded that it be given the right to fix election dates.
